How this guide was made: Research-based. Plan details come from the official Claude and ChatGPT pricing pages, checked October 14, 2026. We haven’t run a side-by-side writing test, so we don’t claim either one “writes better”. Run the same prompt in both and judge the drafts yourself.

The short answer

Both assistants can outline, draft and edit a blog post. The real differences for a blogger are what the free plan lets you do, how limits work, and what the first paid tier costs.

  • Claude publishes a clear price for Pro ($17/month billed annually, $20 monthly) and explains its limits as a rolling five-hour window.
  • ChatGPT offers unlimited text chats on Free (subject to abuse guardrails) and several paid tiers (Go, Plus, Pro). Its pricing page lists features per plan, but the version we checked didn’t show prices in a form we could verify, so check it directly.

What the free plans include

Text chatYesUnlimited (abuse guardrails)
Web searchYesYes
File uploadsCreate and edit files with code executionLimited
ProjectsUp to 5Yes
Deep researchNoLimited
MemoryYesLimited

For blogging, the free plans are enough to see which assistant’s drafts you prefer. Claude Free lets you keep up to five Projects, which is useful if you want each blog category to keep its own notes and style guide.

Claude Pro is $17/month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 billed monthly. It adds more usage, Projects without the five-project cap, Research, and more Claude models. Max starts at $100/month for people who work with Claude all day.

ChatGPT Plus adds advanced reasoning models, expanded messages and uploads, expanded deep research, and Projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Go sits between Free and Plus, and the pricing page notes that Go “may include ads”. Confirm current prices on the ChatGPT pricing page.

How the limits work

Claude says every plan has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits on paid plans, and that Pro gives at least 5x the usage of Free per session. There’s no fixed message count.

ChatGPT describes most features as “limited”, “expanded” or “maximum” by plan rather than giving numbers. If you draft long posts in a single session, test that first on the free tier of each.

A two-tool workflow for a solo blog

If you use both free plans, one simple split is:

  1. Outline and research in whichever assistant you prefer, using web search to collect sources you then open and read yourself.
  2. Draft section by section from your outline, pasting in your own notes, examples and opinions.
  3. Edit by hand. Cut filler, check every fact against the source, and add what only you know.
  4. Optimize for your target keyword with an SEO content tool such as Surfer, then check basics like titles and internal links.

Tools in this stack: Claude or ChatGPT (free plans), Surfer for on-page optimization, and a keyword tool. If you’re on a budget, see Semrush free plan limits.

Will AI-written posts rank?

Google’s own guidance says it rewards “original, high-quality content” that shows E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness), “however it is produced”. It also says using AI “doesn’t give content any special gains”, and that using automation mainly to manipulate rankings breaks its spam policies. In practice: AI can help you write, but the post still has to be useful and original. More in how to start a blog with AI.

How to choose

  1. Paste one real brief into both (title, outline, audience, tone) and compare the drafts.
  2. If you keep many reference docs per site, look at Projects on each plan.
  3. If you do a lot of source research, compare Claude’s Research (paid) with ChatGPT’s deep research (limited on Free, included on Plus).
  4. Always fact-check and edit. Neither tool replaces your own experience, which is what makes a post worth reading.

FAQ

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for blog posts? We haven’t tested them side by side, so we won’t name a winner. Both free plans let you try the same prompt and decide.

Can I use either one free? Yes. Both have permanent free plans (October 2026).

Can Google detect Claude or ChatGPT content? Google hasn’t said it penalizes AI-written content as such. Its guidance focuses on quality, not on how a post was produced.

Should I pay for both Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus? Most solo bloggers don’t need both. Use the free plans until one clearly saves you more editing time, then pay for that one.

Which AI is best for SEO blog posts? A general assistant drafts; an SEO tool tells you what to cover for a keyword. See best SEO tools for solopreneurs.

How much does Claude Pro cost? $17/month billed annually ($200/yr) or $20 monthly, excluding tax (October 2026).

Bottom line

Start on both free plans with a real post. Pay for the one whose drafts need less editing for your voice, and keep doing your own research and fact-checking.
