How this guide was made: Research-based. Every price and limit below comes from the vendor’s official pricing page, checked as of Oct 2026. We haven’t run blind listening tests, so we make no claims about which voice sounds most natural. Try your own script on each free tier.

Why look for an ElevenLabs alternative?

ElevenLabs bundles text to speech, voice cloning, dubbing, music and more into one credit pool. Its Free plan gives you 10,000 credits a month but no commercial license, which starts on Starter at $6/month (Oct 2026). People usually start looking elsewhere for one of these reasons:

  • You want a free tier that lists commercial use
  • You need cheaper bulk text to speech, usually through an API
  • You’d rather have voice tools inside your video editor
  • You prefer pay-as-you-go to a monthly subscription

1. Fish Audio: credit plans for creators

Fish Audio’s pricing page (Oct 2026) lists:

PlanPriceCredits/monthListed generation
Free$08,000Up to 7 minutes
Plus$11/mo billed annually ($132/yr), $15 monthly250,000Up to 200 minutes
Pro$75/mo billed annually ($900/yr), $100 monthly2,000,000Up to 1,620 minutes

Fish Audio says each minute of generation costs roughly 600–625 credits, and unused credits don’t roll over. The Free tier is limited to 500 characters per generation and 3 public voice slots, and its feature list includes “Commercial use”; Plus says “Commercial use allowed”. Check the terms yourself before you monetize Free-tier audio.

Compared with ElevenLabs: Fish Audio Plus lists 250,000 credits for $15 monthly; ElevenLabs Creator lists 121,000 credits for $22 monthly. Credits aren’t the same unit across vendors, so compare minutes of audio, not raw credits.

2. Murf API: simple pay-as-you-go pricing

Murf’s API pricing page (Oct 2026) lists:

  • $10 free for API calls, no credit card required
  • Text to speech at $0.01 per 1,000 characters (Falcon, built for real-time voice agents) or $0.03 per 1,000 characters (studio-quality)
  • Voice changer at $0.10/minute, translation at $0.02 per 1,000 characters
  • Purchased credit never expires; 150+ voices in 35+ languages

This is API pricing. It makes sense if you’re a developer or use a tool built on Murf’s API. Murf’s Studio plan prices didn’t load in a verifiable form on our check date, so we’ve left them out. Our ElevenLabs vs Murf comparison goes deeper.

3. Descript: AI voice inside a video editor

If you mainly need voice to fix or extend recordings, Descript’s paid plans include AI Speech with custom voice clones and regenerate, so you can type a correction instead of re-recording. Plans start at Hobbyist, $16/month billed annually or $24 monthly (Oct 2026). It isn’t a standalone TTS studio like ElevenLabs, but if you already edit in Descript, it’s one less tool to pay for and learn. See Descript vs Runway.

Try Descript

4. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech: big free allowance for developers

Google’s pricing page (Oct 2026) lists free monthly character allowances by voice type, then per-character pricing:

Voice typeFree per monthThen
Standard / WaveNet0–4 million chars$4 per 1M chars
Neural20–1 million chars$16 per 1M chars
Chirp 3: HD0–1 million chars$30 per 1M chars
Studio0–1 million chars$160 per 1M chars

Billing must be enabled, and usage beyond the free limit is charged automatically. There’s no creator studio here; you work through the API or the console.

5. Amazon Polly: free tier on AWS

Amazon’s pricing page (Oct 2026) lists Standard voices at $4 per 1M characters, Neural at $16, Generative at $30 and Long-Form at $100. The free tier includes 5 million Standard characters per month, plus 1 million Neural, 500,000 Long-Form and 100,000 Generative characters per month for the first 12 months. AWS also notes a credit-based Free Tier for new customers from July 15, 2025.

How to choose

  1. Estimate your monthly script length in characters or minutes.
  2. Decide studio vs API. If you want a point-and-click studio, compare Fish Audio and ElevenLabs. If you can call an API, Murf, Google and Amazon are much cheaper per character.
  3. Check commercial rights for the exact plan, and never clone a voice you don’t have permission to use.
  4. Test the same script on each free tier and listen yourself.
